Q:  Are you considering  redecorating  but confused by all the different paint types and finishes.  You don't know what Matt and Gloss are, or  the difference between Satin, Eggshell, Silk and Sheen? What's the best type to use for various surfaces?

A:  Choosing the right sheen level will transform the look of your home when decorating, so make sure you consider different finishes to make the most of your space.  Here's a guide to help you make a considered choice when planning your decorating project:

Matt emulsion  is smooth, velvety and helps to hide imperfections on less-than-perfect walls.  it's great on the older properties walls which still have all their character without highlighting the imperfections too much.

Flat matt emulsion  is even more velvety and because matt surfaces don't reflect light, they make all colours look as similar as they can be in very different light conditions. Flat matt works wonders on deeper shades, too.

Satin  and Silk  are 'mid-sheen' finishes, which means they look like a slightly polished surface and reflect a bit of light. Silk is a finish associated with walls and satin for woodwork. You can clean marks from silk wall finishes easily which makes them practical but if you have less-than-perfect walls, all the lumps and bumps show up a lot  more and from different angles the paint job may not look as good as you would like.  A satin finish on woodwork helps to hide imperfections and gives colour a softer appearance which is an over all more subtle.

Eggshell  has less of a sheen than silk or satin and it does look like the surface of an eggshell (the clue's in the name). It sits somewhere between matt and a silk finish and gives a beautiful classic look to woodwork – and can also be used on walls when you want a heritage style look with a tough finish. Eggshell paint is a favorite of pentland painting and decorating and we recommend it for the old Georgian/Vicotrian townhouses in Edinburgh over everything else.

Gloss  is a shiny finish designed for woodwork and it reflects lots of light – so is perfect for paler colours. You have to have a great surface to make it look its best, but it is hugely practical and adds a lovely contrast to walls that are painted in a matt.

Painting and decorating your home is part and parcel of the general maintenance needed to keep your biggest investment safe and sound.  We spend a huge amount of money buying our homes and it makes sense to keep them well maintained.   Painting your external walls of your house can add value, prevent deterioration of render and brick work saving you money in the long run and protect your investment.

A good starting point is your gutters and down pipes, which may have filled with leaves and moss over the autumn and winter months. Clearing your gutters will prevent overflowing rain water and blockages to down pipes.

You can also give your outside a new lease of life by painting the soffit, fascia, gutters and window frames.

External walls can be coated with a protective coating,  giving back the luster of years gone by and added protection.  The transformation can be truly amazing when the exterior of a house has been painted and brought back to life and really does make a home look more appealing from the kerb. ie,  kerb appeal :)

If you haven't got the time to do this type of maintenance yourself,  we offer a wide range of services to maintain your property and keep it looking in tip top condition.  Give us a call and get a free quote or estimate for your exterior painting and decorating project.

Every aspect of decorating, both interior and exterior, is offered here at pentland  painting and decorating company. One thing we never lose sight of is keeping your property spotless at all times.  This is why we don’t like to leave a mess when our decorators are working.  We take care to eliminate your house of the excess dust that is produced using a dust extraction unit rather than using dust sheets alone.  Regardless of it being a painting, decorating or a preparation project, we will complete it and leave the area and your home clean.

If you are wondering how decorators make their work look so easy, it’s actually not as simple as first appearances make it look. Lots of people presume that our profession is an easy one, it’s actually quite challenging when done properly as we do at Pentland painting and decorating. This is especially true since every job’s  specifications require us to adapt to multiple situations that we encounter on almost a daily basis. Fortunately this can offer big opportunities to be creative and also gives us a sense of job satisfaction.

We use the correct tools and equipment in all instances which gives us the confidence and experience needed as we aim to finish the job to the client’s expectations.  As decorators , we always spend a considerable portion of our time preparing surfaces. In many cases this is more than is given to the actual main painting and decorating work. This is how all the best painters operate, as spending roughly 60-70% of every project on preparation makes it much easier for us to complete them with a high end finish.  Preparation consists of scraping away old paint, filling cracks, tackling mould, and a number of other tasks as well.  All of this must be done before the paint tin is even opened or a roll of wallpaper is looked at.

While it may not seem like a big deal to some, decorators must always use the highest quality rollers, brushes and paints that are available. It can seem extravagant to spend a extortionate amounts on a paint brush when a local tool shop sells them cheap but the cheaper models hold less paint, have less filling material which is also known as bristles meaning you’ll have to work twice as hard for a finish that will never be adequate or certainly not the the standard achieved by a professional decorator.

At Pentland Painting and decorating we have  faith in our ability as decorators and ensure we have the right tools for the job and also the correct skillset. Cheap alternatives won't cut it with us.  We strive to make it a point to regularly invest in the most recent in high quality equipment.  The reason for that is simple...we operate on a customer first basis where  customer satisfaction is our focus and not how quickly we can get a job done and move on to the next one.

Preparation is key to a high quality durable finish and Pentland Painting & decorating do this day in day out in Edinburgh and Midlothian.

Professional Decorators will always thoroughly prepare whatever substrate they’re working on to ensure a high quality, long lasting, finish that our customers have come to expect.  Preparation is often the area most homeowners attempting diy don’t spend enough time on, often resulting in poor quality results where as professional painters & decorators will often spend longer preparing the job, than the decorating.

We know that when it comes to decorating, it’s important to take the time to prepare all surfaces properly and thoroughly. To achieve the best finish, Pentland Painting & decorating have to sand all surfaces before and in-between coats of paint. This process can produce large amounts of dust, resulting in a lot of mess.

Most decorators will use dust sheets to protect your surfaces and furniture while they are sanding, but this is ineffective and does not protect against airborne dust, which can cause health issues and also leave a film on surfaces long after the decorators have left your property.  We avoid this problem with the use of our innovative technology.

The sanders we use are connected to dust extraction system which are L class approved, meaning no more than 1% extracted dust can pass out of the filter. Virtually no dust will be released into the air during the sanding process, meaning that your property will be kept clean, neat and without the annoying film of dust that is often left behind during decorating. You won’t have to tidy the room or vacuum up any dust once we’ve completed the work.  all you need to do is enjoy the vision of a clean, fresh and newly decorated home.

Whatever type of work we are doing, whether redecorating a kitchen or bathroom, or painting the exterior of your house, we always make sure to prepare properly and leave a great finish with no mess.
